Complementary Healthcare - Luxury or Necessity?

Interesting question.

My opinion about this has oscillated over the years, starting very firmly in the 'luxury' and now sitting more steadily in the 'necessity'.

Certainly it is not as much as a necessity as, say, open heart surgery! However, I have found that it basically comes down to 'prevention is better then cure'. I have seen this over and over again in many client situations (are you one of them?) where a person has made the decision to put off assistance, only to find a relatively minor issue become a huge obstacle.

Amusingly, I have experienced this myself many times! Most recently this has related to a shoulder issue, more specifically my right rotator cuff. I've been 'pretending' that my shoulder is really 'not that sore' for probably the last 4 or 5 years while I have given 'lip service' to the process of working with structural support and muscle tension/ligament release through kinesiology & remedial massage.

And so, my message this month (to myself as well as to you) is to 'practice what I preach'! Regular kinesiology and remedial massage sessions a necessity to prevent chronic pain (and possible surgery or cortizone injections) and, even more importantly, restore wellbeing and vitality to my body!

What area of your health have you been 'pretending' is okay?

Regards,

Bree.

Overcoming Adversity

Recent weeks for me have been so incredibly eventful, with many ups and downs, twists and turns and a wide variety of emotions.

A short while ago I went to a weekend workshop to explore emotional courage with the theme being vulnerability. I was part of a beautiful experience where people I had never met before shared some of their deep emotional stories, all of them filled with some sort of adversity, hardship or trauma. I participated in my own healing by sharing my own vulnerability and came away from the workshop so inspired by the courage, hope, and emotions that everyone in the group had shown. I had also reflected over the weekend on the trauma and adversity that I have overcome and how strong and confident I felt in my ability to move through difficult stages in life.

Two days later I was notified that my living arrangements would have to change, which placed strain on my financial situation, which I perceived as a major threat to my studies and career as a natural therapy practitioner. All my confidence and strength went ‘out the window' and my mind, body and spirit buckled under the pressure. The distressing state of mind and physical pain I was in brought me scarily close to my past adversity. I did not like this at all and I was determined to succeed.

I slowly felt stronger mentally as I started explore the options and attempted to rest my body and I was on my way to climbing back up

I then received notification that some financial support I was receiving would no longer be available to me. What followed was varying degrees of sadness and anger and a sense of being overwhelmed. I had some bodywork done which eased the physical pain a little bit and some Kinesiology balance's to work through this situation from a different perspective. The effects of the Kinesiology were immediate, re-centering me and I was back in action on all dimensions!

Then I attended my last workshop for my certificate 4 in Kinesiology and it just so happened to be on Overcoming Adversity. What perfect timing for me to learn and tidy up the loose ends regarding my ability to move through challenges in life.

For some people they experience adversity or hardship and they move forward in their lives and do not become ill, for other people they become ‘stuck' in events/situations and become ill. What I explored this weekend was why there is this difference in people's reactions, what these differences are and what my reaction to this recent stress was in comparison.

What I discovered was that I went from being 100% committed, in control and enjoying life's challenges to an alienated, powerless victim who felt threatened. I learnt about how my resilience and strengths allowed me to transform that struggling victim back into the confident and capable survivor that in my heart I know I am. I learnt many techniques and strategies which I look forward to applying in my own life as well as in my Kinesiology practice.

I feel as though these past weeks have been such an amazing opportunity for me to grow personally and have prepared me well not only for overcoming my own adversities but have also provided the vital skills required in assisting other people in learning how to overcome theirs.

Regards,

Sarah
