History of Massage

The word ‘massage' has historical roots in Greek  - ‘masso' or ‘massein' meaning to touch, handle, knead or squeeze, in Latin - ‘massa', in Portuguese - ‘amassar' meaning to knead, Arabic - ‘mass'h' or ‘mass' meaning to press softly and in Sanskrit - ‘makeh' also meaning to press softly.

Massage has been used by many different cultures throughout history for its healing benefits. Ancient civilizations of Egypt and China (3000 BC) recognized and recorded the benefits and Roman and Greek philosophers and physicians recommended it as treatment for injury after battle as well as for preserving the mind and the body.

After the dark ages (AD 400 to 1450) when information was lost and new information was not written, massage began to emerge once again as a complementary treatment for health. Many techniques used today were being discovered and the formation of many different massage modalities was occurring. During the modern era (1450 to current date) massage therapy traveled across the world, improved techniques and developed into a skilled profession.
